Here’s my spiel on this über-value Loire Valley sparkler: IT IS ONE OF THE FEW SPARKLING WINES THAT WHEN I DRINK IT, I’M NOT WISHING I WERE DRINKING CHAMPAGNE. It is a delightful bubbly. Made from 100% Chenin Blanc, the flavors are true to the grape. I taste ripe peaches and tangy apricot notes with this crazy chalky texture that races through from start to finish. The dosage is low compared to many Champagnes. At only 5 grams sugar per liter, this is way drier then that stuff that sounds something like vove klikoh. The bright flavors come from the ripeness of the fruit. The dry finish balances out nicely with the fruit creating what I like to describe as the “potato chip phenomenon”; one sip is not enough and is quickly followed by another, and another, and another. At $16.98 per bottle, adding a bit of sophistication to your New Year’s Eve revelry has become that much more affordable. 

My food/wine experimentations with Domaine d’Orfeuilles Vouvray Brut have been resounding successes. It is remarkably versatile. What I have particularly enjoyed is serving this with first course salads. Not long ago, I made one composed of bitter greens with a warm Balsamic vinaigrette topped with prawns sautéed in orange juice and zest. The peachy flavors of the wine played well with the bitterness of the salad and the chalkiness of the wine melded perfectly with the acidity of the Balsamic and orange juice. Little effort on my part, but oh my, what impact this pairing had on my guests!
