Lamiable Rose Brut

How unimaginative of me to write about Lamiable’s Rose Brut a week before Valentine’s Day. What can I say; I am a sucker for Champagne and a fool for Rose. First, a little background is in order. David tasted Lamiable’s Rose Brut back in January of ’09 for the first time. He returned from France raving about the wine to us. David was determined to get some for the store though it was not that easy. As far as we knew, the Rose Brut had never before been imported to the US. David never gave up, made it happen and the wine arrived right before Thanksgiving. The Wine House staff was treated to a bottle of bubbly of our own choosing for Thanksgiving. Every staff member left the store with a bottle of the Lamiable Rose Brut. Back at work, I interrogated my colleagues, demanding a play-by-play account of flavors and textures. I needed to know exactly what they thought of the wine. You see, I never drank my bottle. I am embarrassed to admit that with the craziness of work, family, and the like, I was just too distracted and exhausted to drink mine. I wanted my full attention paid to the wine. Goofy, I know. And so the day arrived, New Year’s Eve, when everything was set in place to pop open the cork. The wine was chilled, the flutes were washed and dried, and the take-out sushi from around the corner was laid out on a decorative platter. I put on high heels and a black dress then signaled my husband to break out the Lamiable Rose Brut. Crazy good, yes, but was I mad! My first thought after taking a sip was that the boys back at the store had held out on me. I was steamed. They all loved the wine, sure, but why didn’t they sit me down and insist I drink the wine immediately? After all, I could have been hit by a bus and never tasted the Lamiable Rose Brut now that would have been a bloody shame! After my second sip I looked at my husband and declared that we were so having this for Valentine’s Day. I have been patient for six weeks but can wait no longer. Another bottle will be consumed February 14th. You should think about doing the same.
Established in 1950, Lamiable is a small grower in Tours-sur-Marne due east of Epernay. On the label you will see “RM”, an abbreviation for recolte-manipulant. This means that this is a grower that sells his own wine. There has been a deepening interest in Grower Champagnes that has paralleled the public’s interest in small production wine from around the world. I remember a time when California wine drinkers sought out the newest cult/small production winery but did not think twice about drinking Champagne from producers who made millions of bottles. I think this is slowly changing. Lamiable’s Rose Brut is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from Grand Cru vineyards. It has full flavors of Rainier cherry, pomegranate and…wait, I have to stop here. Actually, I can’t remember all my minute tasting notes for this wine. It was all I could do, not to just suck it down, all at once. It took every bit of will power I could muster up not to guzzle it. Oh how it harmonized with the sushi. The salty goodness of the soy sauce in which I dipped my sushi brought out an earthy note in the wine that on its own was hidden beneath the fruit. But beyond that I cannot recall a thing. I was transported to that happy place that only Champagne, really good Champagne, has a way of doing. I am reminded of a write-up Peter wrote back in August. It concluded with the sentiment that because life is short, don’t miss out on drinking real Champagne with a loved one. I’m taking Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to do just that. My husband will be preparing a meal for me that day, as is our tradition. I’ll be sipping Lamiable’s Rose Brut toasting to our good fortune that we are still together. –Anya Balistreri
