2015 Muscadet, Domaine Des 3 Versants $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Located in the village of La Févrie, on the banks of the Sevre River, this 4th generation family owned estate makes textbook Muscadet. Handpicked grapes are vinified in tank and left on the lees (sur lie) through the winter before bottling. Super crisp with a tonic attack, try it with raw oysters (the perfect pairing) or with a main course salad.

2016 Bianco, Isola Del Satiro $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
This is an appealing blend of Catarrato, a native Sicilian grape, and Grecanico, aka Garganega, the grape most commonly used for making Soave. Produced by Alcesti whose vineyards stretch over 30 hectares south of Marsala on Sicily’s west coast. Youthful, with vigorous notes of yellow fruit, pair with Arancini, grilled swordfish or stuffed squid.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Clifford Bay $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
In the heat of summer, a vibrant, grassy, sassy Sauvignon Blanc will often hit the spot. This Sauvignon Blanc is made with grapes grown in New Zealand’s Marlborough region, and they claim to have approximately 2400 hours of sunshine per year. The sunny, dry climate ensures full ripening of the grapes. Anything with goat cheese pairs beautifully here.

2016 Rosé Les Cimels, Château d’Or et de Gueules $14.59, $11.67 reorder
Fresh off the boat, and the first of our sextet of 2016 French Rosés to be included in The Dirty Dozen, the Les Cimels Rosé is a lively, dry offering. Made in the Provenç:al style, blending 40% Mourvèdre and 40% Cinsault (with equal parts Syrah and Grenache), one sip can whisk you away to the pebbly shores of France’s Mediterranean coast. Serve it with a bowl o’mussels.

2015 Entre-Deux-Mers Blanc, Château Ferran $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Another 4 grape blend here, (40% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon, 10% Muscadelle, 10% Sauvignon Gris) this white Bordeaux is all about great value! All tank fermented, one swirl and sniff results in clean, fresh aromas of acacia and citrus blossoms. The palate opens up to flavors of apricots and peaches and it finishes crisp and complex. Petrale Sole will work well with this wine.

2015 Bourgogne Aligoté, Domaine Verret $14.49, $11.59 reorder
Brand new among our roster of French imports, Domaine Verret is located in the Yonne department of Burgundy. Southwest of Chablis and southeast of the city of Auxerre, it’s a hidden corner of Burgundy. This Aligot´ makes for a perfect apèritif white. Notes of straw and leesy white fruit greet you aromatically and the palate is round with a fruity core. Crabcakes anybody?

2012 BioNoir, Tinhof $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder
Organically grown Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent are blended together to create a soft-tannin red that exudes aromas of red cherry and violet notes. Erwin Tinhof owns thirty five acres of vineyards in the northern part of Austria’s Burgenland region. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, so chill it if you need to – serve with pork & veggie brochettes.

2015 Rosso Conero, Marchetti $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Maurizio Marchetti is masterful with the Montepulciano grape. His entry-level Rosso Conero, the Castro di San Silvestro, over delivers for price, vintage to vintage. Aged in old Slavonian oak barrels for 14 months, this wine combines power with finesse. Brambly blackberry flavors are front and center. A smart choice for humble cuts of beef.

2015 Red Blend, Jordanov $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Winemaking in the landlocked Macedonian Republic can be traced back centuries. The Jordanov family makes wine from both indigenous and international varieties at their winery in Tikves. The Red Blend is a third each Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Vranec, a black-skinned grape native to the Balkans. Enjoy with cevapcici or sausages.

2014 Côtes de Provence Les Trois Frères, Domaine des Aspras $17.59, $14.07 reorder
“I like my red wines earthy and fuller bodied.” Say that to any of us, and we’ll put a bottle of the 2014 Les Trois Frères in your hands. 90% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon; the farming is all organic here, and the wine dark and brooding with that dominant earthy aroma. It’s the perfect wine for those grilled steaks and truffled mashed potatoes.

2013 Agrippa, Grange des Rouquette $17.59, $14.07 reorder
The southern Rhône Valley’s dominant red grape has to be Grenache, though there is a healthy dose of Syrah growing there which is used in blends. So a 100% Syrah from the southern Rhône is a bit of an anomaly, though Thierry Boudinaud happily makes his Agrippa when the conditions are perfect. Pour it with a smoked brisket.

2015 Chianti Montalbano, Pierazzuoli $13.49, $10.79 reorder
And rounding out this month’s DD is our pal, Enrico Pierazzuoli’s 2015 Chianti Montalbano. When he was here back in February, Enrico regaled us with tales of the challenges of the 2014 vintage, though he was happy with the end result. His take on the 2015? “We could have just stayed at the beach.” Conditions were THAT good. A perfect spaghetti red.

2016 Rosé, Balancing Act $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder

Only 400 cases were made of this charming Washington State Cabernet Franc Rosé. The pale apricot color hints at the delicate melon and strawberry fruit. At only 12% alcohol, this Rosé has a light and easy palate feel. Perfect on a hot summer evening while dining alfresco. Food pairing options here are vast, though a big garden salad would be nice!

2014 Erbaluce di Caluso, Giacometto $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder

Erbaluce is an Italian white grape variety that has high levels of natural acidity and is grown mainly in northern Piedmont. The estate of Bruno Giacometto is located in the commune of Caluso, about 30 kilometers northeast of Turin. Super refreshing and full of vigor, this wine is ideally suited for raw seafood, especially oysters on the half shell.

2014 Devon Riesling, Richard Böking $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder

This dry/off-dry Riesling is a blend of fruit grown from the winery’s top 5 steep-slope vineyards that don’t end up in their single-vineyard bottlings. The grapes are picked early to retain freshness and minerality. Classic juicy notes of green apple and minty herbs finish tart and tangy. Serve with Korean fried chicken, Thai curries or a pan-fried pork chop.

2015 Gavi di Gavi Rovereto, Ernesto Picollo $15.49, $12.39 reorder

Made from 100% Cortese, Gianlorenzo Picollo ferments and raises this Gavi di Gavi in all stainless steel tank. This gives the wine its freshness and clean expression. Quality-wise, you’ll be hard pressed to find a white wine close to this price. Gavi di Gavi is the wine of choice on the Italian Riviera, so feel free to pop it with your mussels or shrimp scampi.

2015 Côtes du Rhône Blanc, Tour de l’Isle $14.99, $11.99 reorder

Whaddya get when you blend fairly equal parts Rousanne, Marsanne, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc? To Robert Rocchi, proprietor of Tour de l’Isle, you get a delectable, balanced white wine that’s long on character and short on price. With summer on the immediate horizon, this is a great go-to white for those warm evenings. Serve it with seared scallops.

NV Vouvray Brut, Domaine d’Orfeuilles $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder

Speaking of outstanding values – the Vouvray Brut from Domaine d’Orfeuilles has to be our favorite budget sparkler with its Granny Smith Apple-like fruit and dusty minerality. Anya swears that it is the only sparkling wine that she can drink and not wish that it was Champagne. Sparkling wine pairs particularly great with salty foods like fried chicken.

2016 Barbera d’Asti, Il Falchetto $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder

This is some Barbera d’Asti! Here you will find red cherry fruit buoyed by Barbera’s telltale acid freshness and soft tannins. It’s essentially a single-vineyard bottling from the commune of Agliano Terme called Pian Scorrone. The bottles have a unique dimple under the back label, but don’t fret, this wine is perfect for a bowl of olives, a fresh baguette, and a salumi platter.

2015 Blaufränker, Pneisl 1L $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder

Sisters Birgit and Katrin make this dynamite Blaufrankisch from their family’s estate in Austria. Just across the border in Hungary, they also make wine from their ancestral vineyards. This versatile red is fruity and dry with notes of cherry and rose petal. It comes in a screwcap liter-sized bottle, so there is more to enjoy! Serve at cellar temp to retain vibrancy.

2013 Dão Reserva, Porta dos Templarios $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder

This is a sturdy, fruit-driven Portugese red made from a blend of three grapes, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz and Jaen. The overall quality of wines being imported from Portugal has improved dramatically over the past decade. If you are looking to find quality and bang for your buck, its time to explore this wine region. Match it up with chorizo or merguez.

2013 Syrah/Grenache, Grange des Rouquette $10.99, $8.79 reorder

No fuss, no muss – TWH pal Thierry Boudinaud blends tank-fermented Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre for his Grange des Rouquette red. Its round purple fruit flavors and aromas are easy to like and its price point makes it easy to stock up on. No need to overthink any pairing ideas – it’s great on its own, or will suit burgers, pizza, or pasta perfectly.

2015 Barco Reale di Carmignano, Le Farnete $14.59, $11.67 reorder

Speaking of pasta-pairing wines, this spaghetti red made by another TWH pal, Enrico Pierazzuoli, is just the kind of wine you get if you stop somewhere in the Tuscan countryside and order a bicchiere di vino rosso. Made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Barco Reale gets a touch of new barrel treatment which gives it its complex character.

2014 Château Couronneau Bordeaux Supérieur $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder

Winemaker Christophe Piat is fully on the biodynamic train these days with a handful of vintages under his belt. Say what you want, but we’ve noticed a big difference in the expression of his wines of late – as in, they’re explosive! The purity of fruit combined with the sense of place makes this an ideal bottle to open with a juicy, sizzling porterhouse.

Kent Rasmussen’s winery began over thirty years ago out of his garage. Today, Kent has a modern facility in southern Napa. Ramsay is a companion label that focuses on combining quality with affordability. This well-balanced Chardonnay is full, without question, but stays fresh and lively on the palate. Serve it up with some buttermilk fried chicken sandos.

2015 Vermentino, Federici $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
The Ligurian coastline is known as the Italian Riviera. Not far from the Tuscan border, in an area famous for Carrara marble quarries, is where you will find Cantine Federici. Vermentino is the dominant white grape variety, producing mineral-driven, floral, crisp wines. A tiny bit of Albarola is blended in too. Try with basil pesto pasta or use other herbs.

Quinta da Raza is a family estate established in 1769 in the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. Their soil is unique for the region because it is granitic with bits of clay and schiste – ideal conditions for producing crisp, vibrant whites. Arinto is known for its citrus expression: so think lemon and grapefruit. Thirst quenching and delicious, serve it with asparagus.

A recent article featured in The Wine Advocate sings the praises of the 2014 vintage for white Bordeaux. Neal Martin goes on the record by stating, “Much is sold for bargain prices compared to other French wine regions.” Biodynamically farmed Couronneau is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. Serve it with spring salads with goat cheese.

It says Viognier, though 15% Marsanne is blended in, giving this user-friendly white added complexity and richness. It’s all tank fermented, allowing the clean, fruity/blossomy aromas to pop. On the palate, it’s light to medium bodied and has a crisp finish. You can serve this as an aperitif or as a versatile house white, as it pairs well with poultry or seafood.

For many of us, Rosé is appropriate to drink all year long; for others, it is a seasonal beverage. Well, if it is indeed a seasonal wine, the season has begun! Sure, there’s a particular satisfaction one gets sipping on a glass of Rosé on a warm afternoon or evening. This Rosé has just the right amount of fruity goodness to get you pouring that second glass.


2012 Zio Paolo, Vino Lauria $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
This 100% Nero d’Avola was fermented in stainless steel tanks before bottling. The grapes were grown organically around Alcamo in western Sicily half way between Trapani and Palermo. Here the soil is rich in clay and limestone and the climate arid. Try this simple, friendly red with eggplant and tomato-based dishes like Moussaka or Parmigiana.


2013 Pinot Noir, Praxis $13.95 sale price, $13.25 reorder
Bill Arbios is a veteran winemaker with over forty years of winemaking under his belt. His 2013 Praxis Pinot Noir is made from grapes grown just west of the town of Sonoma, not far from Carneros, yet still within the Sonoma Coast AVA. It is medium-bodied with earthy flavors of cherry and soft plum, accented by spice notes. Pair with lamb riblets or chops.


2014 Estate Red, Christopher Michael $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
The Harm brothers are the masterminds behind Oregon’s Underwood wines. They teamed up again to tackle Washington State grapes. This red blend is predominantly Syrah, with additions of Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec and Grenache. Juicy, soft tannins combine with plum and red currant fruit – perfect with flank, flap or skirt steak.

2015 Fronton On l’Appelle Negrette, Vignobles Arbeau $12.59, $10.07 reorder
The last couple of DD’s featured a couple of wines sourced from the Fronton region near the French city of Toulouse. This semi-remote viticultural area is the home of the Negrette grape. This is 100% Negrette. The aromas are bright and fruity, with hints of herbs and forest floor. The palate is light in body, making this a fine red option for rotisserie chicken.


2012 Château Les Gabriaux, Médoc $9.98 net price, $8.98 reorder
Who says Bordeaux wines are expensive? Certainly, the 60 or so most famous wines from the region can command a king’s ransom, but what about the other 7,000? Of course, one must be on their toes, keeping an eye out for quality among the less expensive wines. That’s how we found the Les Gabriaux. It’s inexpensive and delicious. Serve up some Prime Rib here.


2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Ca’ Lojera $15.99, $12.79 reorder
You may know Ambra and Franco Tiraboschi’s Ca’ Lojera by their terrific Lugana white wines made from the Turbiana grape, but here’s a sample of their 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown near Lake Garda in Italy. It’s expressive and layered, kind of a throwback to those California Cabs of yore with their brambly berry fruit and hints of mint.

2015 Orvieto Classico Vignarco, Palazzone $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
In 1969, the Dubini family purchased their property in the Umbrian hills, planting grapes soon after. By 1982 they had made their first Orvieto. The Vignarco is made up of 80% Garganega and is entirely vinified in stainless steel. Golden-hued, fresh with a lovely floral scent, it’s perfect for light meals and appetizers; try it with crab cakes atop dressed greens.

2015 Moscato Secco, Uvaggio $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Don’t let the “Moscato” scare you … this is “Secco” so it’s dry, dry, dry. Yes it has lovely exotic aromatics, but it has so much more going for it. A dead-ringer for a Ribolla Giallo from Alto Adige, this perfumed and alluring white is extremely versatile as a stand-alone sipper or a meal enhancer. Match-ups include pasta alla Vongole, vegetable gratins or frittata.

2011 Mottobello, Brigatti $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
This wine hails from Colline Novaresi, which is situated in Piedmont’s northeast corner. Here the grape Erbaluce (or locally known as Greco Novarese) is the exclusive white varietal. It’s known for producing higher acid wines, though the 2011 Mottobello has tempered acidity, crisp fruit flavors and a light overall palate feel. It’s great with oysters.

2015 Lugana, Ca’Lojera $15.99, $12.79 reorder
Franco and Ambra Tiraboschi’s Ca’Lojera is located in Sirmione, on the southern shore of Lake Garda. Caution: If you search images for a picture of Sirmione, you may feel the need to visit. The grape they use for their Lugana is Turbiana, the local name for Trebbiano di Garda. It has a bright yellow fruit and floral bouquet and finishes crisp and clean.


2015 Sauvignon & Sémillon Hors Saison, Domaine La Hitaire $14.49, $11.59 reorder
Modeled after the white blends from nearby Bordeaux, this Côtes de Gascogne is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon. It’s all tank-fermented, so it’s fresh and vibrant with aromas of pears, kiwi, and apricots. The palate is crisp and expansive, and the finish balanced and lipsmacking. This is the kind of wine to serve with breaded filet of sole


2014 Ventoux Blanc, Domaine de Fondrèche $16.99, $13.59 reorder
White wines from the southern Rhône Valley may be among the most overlooked wines from France, but quality to price-wise, they are some of the most value driven wines out there! This 4 grape blend (Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Rolle) is teeming with complexity. Think pears and nectarines – this is great on its own, or you can pair it with pork chops.


2014 Toro, Yaso $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
100% Tinta de Toro, aka Tempranillo, the Toro region of Spain produces robust, hearty reds – this one from Yaso is no exception. Just 40 miles east of the Portugese border, viticulture here dates back to pre-Roman times. Deep purple with lush fruity flavors, it’s a stick-to-your-ribs kinda red. Some take-out from your favorite BBQ place is a wise option here.


2013 Red Wine Blend, MF Wines $15.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Matthew Fritz wines frequently appear at TWH because they offer tremendous value. They are aces at sourcing high quality fruit at below market prices, then passing along the savings. This particular Red Wine Blend is a delicious combo of 85% Merlot and 15% Petite Sirah, all from Napa Valley. It’s super with a French Dip, Osso Buco or a calzone.


2014 Ribera del Duero, Sembro $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Another Spanish Tempranillo, this one comes from further inland in Ribera del Duero. Ribera del Duero sits on a high plateau at about 2800 feet above sea level, where summers are hot and winters are harsh. The Sembro has vibrant red cherry fruit, easy tannins and a medium-bodied texture. Try pairing it with Merguez lamb sausages, chorizo or fajitas.

2014 Fronton, Château Coutinel $8.99, $7.19 reorder
The seldom heard of grape Negrette thrives in the Fronton region, which is near the city of Toulouse, France. Think of it as a cross between Gamay Noir and Malbec. Its aromas are of cherries and forest floor and it’s medium bodied. The dark plummy notes take over mid-palate, and the finish is rich and complex with a hint of amaro. It’s great with spare ribs.


2012 Bergerac, Château Calabre $7.95 sale price, $7.55 reorder
About 100km north of Fronton, as the crow flies, is the appellation of Bergerac, of Cyrano fame. Its proximity to Bordeaux shows in the grapes grown for the local red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This easy-drinker shows bright red and purple fruit with an herbaceous quality. It’s a great wine to pop with burgers of any sort.


2012 Château Les Clauzots, Graves Rouge $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Speaking of Bordeaux, this month’s DD has one of those too! Château Les Clauzots is located in the region’s southern tip, near the city of Langon. It’s 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and does it deliver for its modest price! Dark berries and cassis dominate the aromas and the palate is rich, balanced, and refined. Here’s your steak night wine.

Here we are again, it’s January, and the slate has been wiped clean. 2017 has arrived, and here in northern California, Mother Nature has been making up for lost time by drenching us with rainfalls which have exceeded our average. 2013 Blanquette de Limoux, Saint Nicolas $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder
This delightful and affordable sparkling wine will keep you celebrating well into the New Year! Blanquette de Limoux is a high elevation region along the Pyrenean foothills. The wine is produced from the Mauzac grape, which ripens late and retains good acidity. Honeyed and full of orchard fruit flavors, try this bubbly with all types of snacks and finger foods.

2016 Gewurztraminer, Banyan $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
One can easily make the argument that this Gewurztraminer from Monterey County is one of California’s best wine values. The fruit comes from old vines grown at Ventana Vineyards. Winemaker Kenny Likitprakong intentionally made it off-dry to pair with Southeast Asian cuisine. Give this Gewurz a go with curry, be it red, green or yellow. Delicious!

2015 Verdicchio, Fattoria Laila $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Fattoria Laila’s vines are grown in the rolling hills of the Marche overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Verdicchio translates to “little green one,” hence the flavors can lean toward the herbaceous. Along with fresh, cut grass aromas, this Verdicchio displays crisp acidity on the palate. A great meal starter with shrimp scampi, fried calamari or marinated cracked crab.

2015 Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, Tour de l’Isle $14.99, $11.99 reorder
Sourced from vines growing in and around the village of Vinsobres, this four grape blend (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette) delivers refreshing orchard fruit aromas with a medium-full body, finishing with zippity fresh acidity. It’s a great all-occasion quaffer, yet would be perfect if paired alongside a platter of seafood tapas.

One of our most popular bargain whites, the Ernesto Picollo Gavi has been a great pleasure to carry for nearly a decade. If one has a look at our staff members’ invoices over the years, it is not beyond the stretch of imagination that the Gavi is one of the top white wines that we take home to share and to drink ourselves! A simple pesto pasta pairs well here.


2014 Montravel Blanc, Château Calabre $10.99, $8.79 reorder
Speaking of TWH employees’ favorite white wines, enter another contestant, this one from just beyond Bordeaux’s eastern outskirts. Daniel Hecquet blends 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon, and 10% Muscadelle to make this easy-going, food friendly, crisp white wine. It works well as an aperitif as well! Otherwise, you can pop it with a tuna salad.


2015 Malbec Reserva, Apaltagua $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Apaltagua harvests their Malbec grapes by hand between April and May. Their vineyard lies between the Curico and Maule Valleys. Maule Valley is one of the first regions to be planted with grapevines by the Spanish. Expect rich notes of cherry and cassis accented by a kiss of vanilla. Well-rounded on the palate, try with beef stew or other one-pot delicacies.


2013 Garnacha, Botijo Rojo $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
The name Botijo Rojo refers to the traditional clay water vessels used by grape pickers during harvest. This is yet another great example of a Spanish wine that delivers both high quality and affordability. 100% Garnacha, flavors of deep red cherries are augmented by dusty notes of underbrush. Silky and supple, try with pollo con arroz or paella.


2014 Aljubarrota Reserva, $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
A blend of three varietals – Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional and Trincadera – this is a hearty, jammy Portugese red. Both Touriga Nacional and Trincadera are used in the production of Port, so you know the flavors are going to be intense. This high-impact wine is perfect for burgers as well as high-end cuts of meat for a special meal.

2014 Chianti Montalbano, Tenuta Pierazzuoli $13.49, $10.79 reorder
Longtime TWH pal, Enrico Pierazzuoli (who will be visiting us in February!) crafts Tuscan wines from two different sites: one in Carmignano, just west of Firenze, and the other in nearby Chianti Montalbano. Enrico makes his Chianti from 100% Sangiovese, and as written on the label, it takes one vine to make one bottle of wine. Drink this with a nice pappardelle.


2013 Syrah, Domaine Saint Antoine $11.49, $9.19 reorder
Moving down to the south of France, in Saint Gilles to be exact, is Marlène and Jean-Louis Emmanuel’s Domaine de Saint Antoine. We’ve been working with the Emmanuels for 20 years, and it’s easy to see why: Value. Jean-Louis de-stems his fruit and raises the wines in tank for that pure fruit expression. Try this Syrah with some smoked pork ribs, yum!


2013 Agrippa, Grange des Rouquette $17.59, $14.07 reorder
And lastly, speaking of Syrah, check out this southern Rhône Syrah named after the famous Roman architect who allegedly designed the famous Pont du Garde near the Rhône River Valley. Thierry Boudinaud doesn’t make this wine in every vintage; it takes a special one for him to do so. It’s full bodied, so think big with your pairing ideas … like a rib-eye!

2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Maimai $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
This vibrant Sauvignon Blanc comes from New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay. Less than 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this unique growing area allows for mild, constant heat during ripening. The resulting wine has juicy flavors of citrus and a strong, pungent note of cut grass. Tank fermented, it’s ideal for spinach salad, chèvre tart, or a late night omelette.

2014 Pinot Grigio, Cantina Riff $11.98 net price, $10.78
Riff’s Pinot Grigio is no stranger to the DD, as it continues to deliver a high level of quality for the money. It takes a visionary producer like Alois Lageder to make such a wine. Most of the fruit is grown on dolomite, a limestone made of fossil deposits, giving it body and texture. Serve with asparagus risotto, pasta primavera, or steamed clams.

2015 Rosado, Olivares $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
TWH doesn’t carry much pink wine from Spain, but this one is so exceptional, we couldn’t pass it up! 70/30 Grenache and Monastrell (Mourvèdre), this Rosado is a dead-ringer for more expensive Bandol Rosé, with its deep red fruit notes and lovely backbone. The full flavors will match well with Caribbean cuisine, Spanish tapas, or Gulf Coast specialties.

2013 Hors Saison, Domaine La Hitaire $13.99, $11.19 reorder
From southwestern France’s Côtes de Gascogne, Armin and Rémy Grassa continue to turn out this delectable homage to white Bordeaux for a fraction of the price. 85% Sauvignon Blanc is blended with Sémillon and fermented in steel tank for freshness. It’s a great non-pretentious, crisp glass of white wine, just in time for Hors Saison … or “Outdoor Season!”


2014 Montravel Terrement, Cháteau Puy-Servain $13.49, $10.79 reorder
Just east of the Bordeaux appellation along the Dordogne river, is Montravel. Winemaker Daniel Hecquet blends equal parts Sauvignon Blanc with Sauvignon Gris, which gives the wine a plump middle and a crisp finish. Another white Bordeaux homage, it’s a serious wine. Pair it with a bowl of mussels, a California Roll, or couscous stuffed Dover sole.


2013 Riesling Vieilles Vines, Domaine St. Rémy $19.99, $15.99 reorder
St. Patrick’s Day is the one day that many wait for in order to eat corned beef and cabbage. We like that dish way too much to relegate it to a once per year meal. Though since Paddy’s Day is this month, why not skip the bloating feeling beer gives you and refine your pairing Alsatian sytle? Riesling pairs perfectly with cabbage, cured meat, and potatoes.


2014 “Remedy Red”, Upside Wines $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Tired of big, heavy red wines? Need a cure for palate fatigue? Try Remedy Red. Half Grenache with the balance split between Syrah and Counoise, this classic Rhône blend offers soft, juicy fruit with little tannins and succulent acidity. Explore the lighter side of California reds with this charmer. Pair with regional meat sandwiches, falafel or fajitas.


2013 Secret Agent Red, Alias $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
There’s no big secret here – just honest, straightforward, tasty juice. Mostly Zinfandel, there is also Cabernet for structure, Merlot for depth and a small dollop of Syrah for the fun of it! No heavy tannins to assault the palate, this red is eager to please. Adaptable to a wide array of foods, Secret Agent Red is a fine choice for large group gatherings.


2013 Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, Fattoria Del Cerro $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
In this instance, Montepulciano refers not to the grape but to the region. Rosso di Montepulciano is made using a minimum of 70% Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. Expect deep red cherry fruit flavors, hints of plums, and a touch of cedar on the finish. Savory and well-balanced, pair it with braised short ribs over polenta or a roast porchetta.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Ca’ Lojera $15.99, $12.74 reorder
Italy’s Lake Garda region is certainly not the first locale one thinks of when they think of Cabernet Sauvignon. Ca’ Lojera’s Ambra and Franco Tiraboschi’s grow Turbiana for their Lugana, but their Cabernet is a big-time sleeper! It shows dark fruits, smoky incense, herbs, and earth with a medium body; great with Bistecca alla Fiorentina.


2013 Merlot, Domaine Saint Antoine $11.49, $9.19 reorder
Good, honest, country French Merlot here. No fancy oak, no massive extraction, just a nice plump, easy to like house red that will pair well with most anything you throw at it. Rhône-like stones are strewn throughout the vineyard holding the warmth that coaxes the fruit to ripeness. This month’s all-purpose red goes with pizza, pasta, salumi, and sunshine.


2012 Côtes-du-Rhône Mataró, Vignobles Boudinaud $17.99, $14.39 reorder
It is not terribly common to find Mourvèdre included in many Côtes-du-Rhônes. That makes a Côtes-du-Rhône that is 100% Mourvèdre a rare bird indeed! Thierry Boudinaud’s Mataró is just that. The region suits this late-ripening variety very well, and this wine has plenty of backbone and expression. It’s a wine for hearty fare; try it with lamb chops.

2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Leaf & Vine $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
This lush, opulent Sauvignon Blanc has notes of lemon curd and ripe grapefruit. The fruit comes from one source, the Turn in the Road Vineyard, located in the Big Valley AVA of Lake County. At elevations of 1400 ft., grown on clay and loam soils, the Sauvignon Blanc ripens nicely yet retains acidity. Pair with finger foods, light appetizers or hors d’oeuvres.

 

2014 Picpoul de Pinet, Chevalier de Novato $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
This terrific value-priced Picpoul de Pinet comes to us by way of a former Napa Valley winemaker turned importer. Clean and vibrant, this “lip stinger” – the meaning of the name Picpoul – white has playful acidity and crisp fruit flavors. Perfect to serve at your next oyster bar party or with classic Mediterranean dishes like croquettes de brandade.

 

2014 Moscato di Pavia IGT, Centorri $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
Three generations of women run the estate that produces Centorri Moscato. Quality is the focus here, making a delightfully fruity, yet restrained Moscato. Slightly frizzante with aromas and flavors of ripe peach, rose petal and ginger, this can work as a pre-dinner aperitif or be served after with cheese, fresh winter fruits and new crop walnuts.

 

2014 Vin de Pays d’Oc Rosé, Grange des Rouquette $10.99, $8.79 reorder
Made from 100% Syrah and vinified using the “saignée” method, or the bleeding off of the Rosé after a little skin contact, the Grange des Rouquette is the south of France in a bottle! Savory red berry fruit joins forces with a little stony mineral and the palate is clean and crisp. Hand a glass of this Rosé to your favorite chef and you’ll get a smile.

 

2013 Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, Domaine Boudinaud $13.99, $11.19 reorder
One doesn’t immediately think “blanc” when thinking about Côtes-du-Rhône wines, as white wines represent just 25% of the appellation’s output. But just as with the reds, you will find Côtes-du-Rhône blancs deliver huge in the price to quality department! 60% Grenache Blanc/40% Roussanne; it’s fresh and fleshy, and will go great with pork chops.

 

2012 Mâcon-Villages Les Tilles, Domaine Sainte Barbe $12.95 sale price, $12.30 reorder
The world’s finest Chardonnay comes from Burgundy, and though much of it comes at a high price, some of it is quite affordable! Take this unoaked Mâcon-Villages from Sainte Barbe. Plenty of lemons, apples, and blossoms in the bouquet, the palate is all in balance, and the finish is firing. A great one to pop with shrimp scampi or if crab season ever happens.

 

2014 Treggiaia, Fattoria di Pugliano $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Winemaker Fulvio Galgani makes this fun food-friendly red that is meant to display the characteristics of a classic Italian table wine. Almost entirely Sangiovese, with small additions of Canaiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon, this cherry-scented red is bright and lively. A super match for pizza, baked pasta dishes or hearty winter soups like Minestrone.

 

2012 Ribera del Duero, Mesoneros de Castilla $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Ribera del Duero, in northern Spain, is famous for its Tempranillo, or Tinta del Pais as it is locally known. A charming, purple-robed red produced by legendary winemaker Ismael Arroyo, who was instrumental in creating the Denominación de Origen. Sultry and texturally smooth; pair it with gamey poultry like duck, goose, or heritage turkey.

 

2010 Chénas, Cave Saint-Cyr $22.98 net price, $20.68 reorder
A family-run winery established in 1963, Saint-Cyr is certified biodynamic. Chénas is one of 10 Crus of Beaujolais. The Gamay vines here are an average age of 55 years and are grown on granitic soil. The aromas evoke floral notes like violet and iris. The mouth feel is fleshy and the fruit is well integrated. It’s super versatile – try it with curries of all types.

 

2014 Malbec, Alberto Furque $14.99, $11.99 reorder
Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past 20 years, you know that some of the world’s finest Malbec comes from Argentina. The Furques’ vines are grown at altitudes exceeding 3000 feet, keeping things cool at night, preserving the fruit’s inherent acidity. Big and bold, this red wine is lively on the palate and would be great with grilled kebabs.

 

2013 Chianti Montalbano, Pierazzuoli $14.49, $11.59 reorder
Longtime pal of TWH Enrico Pierazzuoli makes some serious juice. His 100% Sangiovese Chianti Montalbano is everything you’re looking for in a medium-bodied red. Expressive fruit, rich minerality, and that Tuscan terroir are enough to transport the taster to the land of olive trees and terra-cotta roofing. A bowl of simple pasta with red sauce is perfect here.

Montravel is located just outside of Bordeaux’s eastern outpost near Saint Foy la Grande. Daniel Hecquet is the proprietor/winemaker at Puy-Servain, and his passion for his land, vines, and wines is unrivaled. His Montravel Rouge is a stunning bargain. 90% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc makes for a sturdy St. Emilion-like red; perfect with a filet mignon.
