2016 Rosé, Balancing Act $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder

Only 400 cases were made of this charming Washington State Cabernet Franc Rosé. The pale apricot color hints at the delicate melon and strawberry fruit. At only 12% alcohol, this Rosé has a light and easy palate feel. Perfect on a hot summer evening while dining alfresco. Food pairing options here are vast, though a big garden salad would be nice!

2014 Erbaluce di Caluso, Giacometto $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder

Erbaluce is an Italian white grape variety that has high levels of natural acidity and is grown mainly in northern Piedmont. The estate of Bruno Giacometto is located in the commune of Caluso, about 30 kilometers northeast of Turin. Super refreshing and full of vigor, this wine is ideally suited for raw seafood, especially oysters on the half shell.

2014 Devon Riesling, Richard Böking $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder

This dry/off-dry Riesling is a blend of fruit grown from the winery’s top 5 steep-slope vineyards that don’t end up in their single-vineyard bottlings. The grapes are picked early to retain freshness and minerality. Classic juicy notes of green apple and minty herbs finish tart and tangy. Serve with Korean fried chicken, Thai curries or a pan-fried pork chop.

2015 Gavi di Gavi Rovereto, Ernesto Picollo $15.49, $12.39 reorder

Made from 100% Cortese, Gianlorenzo Picollo ferments and raises this Gavi di Gavi in all stainless steel tank. This gives the wine its freshness and clean expression. Quality-wise, you’ll be hard pressed to find a white wine close to this price. Gavi di Gavi is the wine of choice on the Italian Riviera, so feel free to pop it with your mussels or shrimp scampi.

2015 Côtes du Rhône Blanc, Tour de l’Isle $14.99, $11.99 reorder

Whaddya get when you blend fairly equal parts Rousanne, Marsanne, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc? To Robert Rocchi, proprietor of Tour de l’Isle, you get a delectable, balanced white wine that’s long on character and short on price. With summer on the immediate horizon, this is a great go-to white for those warm evenings. Serve it with seared scallops.

NV Vouvray Brut, Domaine d’Orfeuilles $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder

Speaking of outstanding values – the Vouvray Brut from Domaine d’Orfeuilles has to be our favorite budget sparkler with its Granny Smith Apple-like fruit and dusty minerality. Anya swears that it is the only sparkling wine that she can drink and not wish that it was Champagne. Sparkling wine pairs particularly great with salty foods like fried chicken.

2016 Barbera d’Asti, Il Falchetto $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder

This is some Barbera d’Asti! Here you will find red cherry fruit buoyed by Barbera’s telltale acid freshness and soft tannins. It’s essentially a single-vineyard bottling from the commune of Agliano Terme called Pian Scorrone. The bottles have a unique dimple under the back label, but don’t fret, this wine is perfect for a bowl of olives, a fresh baguette, and a salumi platter.

2015 Blaufränker, Pneisl 1L $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder

Sisters Birgit and Katrin make this dynamite Blaufrankisch from their family’s estate in Austria. Just across the border in Hungary, they also make wine from their ancestral vineyards. This versatile red is fruity and dry with notes of cherry and rose petal. It comes in a screwcap liter-sized bottle, so there is more to enjoy! Serve at cellar temp to retain vibrancy.

2013 Dão Reserva, Porta dos Templarios $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder

This is a sturdy, fruit-driven Portugese red made from a blend of three grapes, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz and Jaen. The overall quality of wines being imported from Portugal has improved dramatically over the past decade. If you are looking to find quality and bang for your buck, its time to explore this wine region. Match it up with chorizo or merguez.

2013 Syrah/Grenache, Grange des Rouquette $10.99, $8.79 reorder

No fuss, no muss – TWH pal Thierry Boudinaud blends tank-fermented Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre for his Grange des Rouquette red. Its round purple fruit flavors and aromas are easy to like and its price point makes it easy to stock up on. No need to overthink any pairing ideas – it’s great on its own, or will suit burgers, pizza, or pasta perfectly.

2015 Barco Reale di Carmignano, Le Farnete $14.59, $11.67 reorder

Speaking of pasta-pairing wines, this spaghetti red made by another TWH pal, Enrico Pierazzuoli, is just the kind of wine you get if you stop somewhere in the Tuscan countryside and order a bicchiere di vino rosso. Made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Barco Reale gets a touch of new barrel treatment which gives it its complex character.

2014 Château Couronneau Bordeaux Supérieur $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder

Winemaker Christophe Piat is fully on the biodynamic train these days with a handful of vintages under his belt. Say what you want, but we’ve noticed a big difference in the expression of his wines of late – as in, they’re explosive! The purity of fruit combined with the sense of place makes this an ideal bottle to open with a juicy, sizzling porterhouse.

Happy New Year! Here we are again, it’s January, and the slate has been wiped clean. 2017 has arrived, and here in northern California, Mother Nature has been making up for lost time by drenching us with rainfalls which have exceeded our average. We looked at the forecast, and it says that the next week will be a wet one. So while we stay dry indoors, why not have one of our January Dirty Dozens within arms’ reach? 2013 Blanquette de Limoux, Saint Nicolas $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder
This delightful and affordable sparkling wine will keep you celebrating well into the New Year! Blanquette de Limoux is a high elevation region along the Pyrenean foothills. The wine is produced from the Mauzac grape, which ripens late and retains good acidity. Honeyed and full of orchard fruit flavors, try this bubbly with all types of snacks and finger foods.

2016 Gewurztraminer, Banyan $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
One can easily make the argument that this Gewurztraminer from Monterey County is one of California’s best wine values. The fruit comes from old vines grown at Ventana Vineyards. Winemaker Kenny Likitprakong intentionally made it off-dry to pair with Southeast Asian cuisine. Give this Gewurz a go with curry, be it red, green or yellow. Delicious!

2015 Verdicchio, Fattoria Laila $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Fattoria Laila’s vines are grown in the rolling hills of the Marche overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Verdicchio translates to “little green one,” hence the flavors can lean toward the herbaceous. Along with fresh, cut grass aromas, this Verdicchio displays crisp acidity on the palate. A great meal starter with shrimp scampi, fried calamari or marinated cracked crab.

2015 Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, Tour de l’Isle $14.99, $11.99 reorder
Sourced from vines growing in and around the village of Vinsobres, this four grape blend (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette) delivers refreshing orchard fruit aromas with a medium-full body, finishing with zippity fresh acidity. It’s a great all-occasion quaffer, yet would be perfect if paired alongside a platter of seafood tapas.


2015 Gavi, Ernesto Picollo $10.99, $8.79 reorder
One of our most popular bargain whites, the Ernesto Picollo Gavi has been a great pleasure to carry for nearly a decade. If one has a look at our staff members’ invoices over the years, it is not beyond the stretch of imagination that the Gavi is one of the top white wines that we take home to share and to drink ourselves! A simple pesto pasta pairs well here.


2014 Montravel Blanc, Château Calabre $10.99, $8.79 reorder
Speaking of TWH employees’ favorite white wines, enter another contestant, this one from just beyond Bordeaux’s eastern outskirts. Daniel Hecquet blends 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon, and 10% Muscadelle to make this easy-going, food friendly, crisp white wine. It works well as an aperitif as well! Otherwise, you can pop it with a tuna salad.


2015 Malbec Reserva, Apaltagua $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Apaltagua harvests their Malbec grapes by hand between April and May. Their vineyard lies between the Curico and Maule Valleys. Maule Valley is one of the first regions to be planted with grapevines by the Spanish. Expect rich notes of cherry and cassis accented by a kiss of vanilla. Well-rounded on the palate, try with beef stew or other one-pot delicacies.


2013 Garnacha, Botijo Rojo $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
The name Botijo Rojo refers to the traditional clay water vessels used by grape pickers during harvest. This is yet another great example of a Spanish wine that delivers both high quality and affordability. 100% Garnacha, flavors of deep red cherries are augmented by dusty notes of underbrush. Silky and supple, try with pollo con arroz or paella.


2014 Aljubarrota Reserva, $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
A blend of three varietals – Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional and Trincadera – this is a hearty, jammy Portugese red. Both Touriga Nacional and Trincadera are used in the production of Port, so you know the flavors are going to be intense. This high-impact wine is perfect for burgers as well as high-end cuts of meat for a special meal.

2014 Chianti Montalbano, Tenuta Pierazzuoli $13.49, $10.79 reorder
Longtime TWH pal, Enrico Pierazzuoli (who will be visiting us in February!) crafts Tuscan wines from two different sites: one in Carmignano, just west of Firenze, and the other in nearby Chianti Montalbano. Enrico makes his Chianti from 100% Sangiovese, and as written on the label, it takes one vine to make one bottle of wine. Drink this with a nice pappardelle.


2013 Syrah, Domaine Saint Antoine $11.49, $9.19 reorder
Moving down to the south of France, in Saint Gilles to be exact, is Marlène and Jean-Louis Emmanuel’s Domaine de Saint Antoine. We’ve been working with the Emmanuels for 20 years, and it’s easy to see why: Value. Jean-Louis de-stems his fruit and raises the wines in tank for that pure fruit expression. Try this Syrah with some smoked pork ribs, yum!

And lastly, speaking of Syrah, check out this southern Rhône Syrah named after the famous Roman architect who allegedly designed the famous Pont du Garde near the Rhône River Valley. Thierry Boudinaud doesn’t make this wine in every vintage; it takes a special one for him to do so. It’s full bodied, so think big with your pairing ideas … like a rib-eye!

2015 Vintner’s Blend, Liana Estates $15.95 sale price, $15.15 reorder
Liana Estates is the second winery from the Peju Family and is located in Carneros. Released at $24 a bottle, we were able to include the Vintner’s Blend in this month’s DD thanks to some friends and family pricing. Mostly Chenin Blanc and all tank-fermented, it is zippy, racy and chock-full of citrus flavors. Pair with pre-dinner snacks and appetizers.

2014 Chardonnay, Dreyer Sonoma $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
This Chardonnay over delivers for the price. The fruit hails from Carneros, is whole cluster pressed then fermented in new and neutral barrel. All the classic flavors are there: citrus, pineapple, pear. Rich but not too oaky, this can work for many occasions. Bring it to your next house party or, if staying in, pair with rotisserie chicken and an herby green salad.

2014 Silvaner alte Reben, Dr. Heyden $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
This dry Silvaner, the third most widely planted grape in Germany, comes from vines over 30 years of age! Beautiful, herbaceous aromas meet with crisp, vibrant peach fruit. Compatible with most veggies (even asparagus!), a first course vegetable terrine or cream soup would be a perfect match here and a fine start to an elegant meal.

2015 Rosé Les Cimels, Château d’Or et de Gueules $13.99, $11.19 reorder
Tipping her cap to the style of pink wines made in Provence, Diane Puymorin uses mostly Mourvèdre and Cinsault for her Les Cimels Rosé. Les Cimels means “bouquet of fruit,” and maybe it’s the 80 year old Mourvèdre vines that lend this wine its distinct bouquet. It’s versatile enough to pair with all sorts of cuisine, especially those which appear on Turkey Day.


2014 Unoaked Chardonnay, The Winery of Good Hope $13.49, $10.79 reorder
Down in Stellenbosch, South Africa, English expat Alex Dale makes a bright, crisp Chardonnay free from any oak influence. Fermented in steel tank from free-run juice only, the aromas are pure, deep, and classy. There’s a distinct mineral drive to go along with the crisp, citrus-like fruit profile. It will suit poultry dishes very well … hint, hint!


2014 Bordeaux Blanc, Château Couronneau $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder
Winemaker Christophe Piat has been on a qualitative roll since first going all organic over a decade ago, and now he has embraced biodynamism. For his blanc, he blends equal parts Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, and the result is a refined white Bordeaux with a great balance of fruit and liveliness. A spinach salad with goat cheese pairs well here.


2009 Puerto Salinas, Sierra Salinas $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
What a tremendous value! This big, bold Spanish blend of Monastrell, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in new and 2-year old French oak. Spicy, dense, black-fruited, no wonder it received a whopping score of 92 points from Robert Parker. Time in the bottle has settled down the tannins. Serve with roasted or braised meats and spicy sausages.


2013 Zinfandel, Il Cuore $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Too often value-priced Zinfandels are marred by off-putting, oaky flavors. Not this one from Il Cuore. Instead the zesty, berry fruit is left alone to charm and delight the palate. Fruity and easy-going, much of the fruit was sourced from Mendocino County. This Zin can wear many hats … bring to a friendsgiving potluck or order in with your favorite pie.


2010 Merlot, Giacato $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
The whimsical label is in juxtaposition to the firm, grippy Merlot fruit found inside the bottle. Renowned winemaker, Fabrizio Moltard, who began his career at Gaja, is responsible for this plummy red. Careful when you get to the bottom of the bottle, it throws a little sediment, but that only helps to explain the wine’s complexity. Try with lamb chops!

2012 Carmignano, Le Farnete $19.59, $15.67 reorder
According to legend, the Cabernet Sauvignon which grows alongside the native Sangiovese in Carmignano, was a wedding gift from the French to Italy when Catherine di Medici married into French Royalty. For the wine, its presence adds backbone and structure. It’s a fancy wine, maybe one for special occasions, like a standing rib-eye roast.


2013 Côtes-du-Rhône La Boissière, Domaine Boudinaud $13.49, $10.79 reorder
Côtes-du-Rhône always delivers. It has to be one of the most reliable viticultural regions for high quality, reasonably priced wines in the world. Our friend Thierry Boudinaud has several irons in the fire in and around the Rhône, but his La Boissière is such a great all-purpose red, we will stop there. It will solve all of your pizza and pasta wine needs.


2012 Château Les Gabriaux, Médoc $9.98 net price, $8.98 reorder
Just like we did last month, we’re including a red Bordeaux which we discovered on our annual En Primeur tasting trip. Again, to suss out quality samples in the sub $10 category is a difficult task, but occasionally we get lucky. Back in February, Neal Martin wrote, ” Check out 2012 Les Gabriaux – a delightful Médoc. That’s not advice. That’s an order.”

2013 Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Panizzi $16.98 net price, $15.28 reorder
The only white wine to reach DOCG status in Tuscany, Vernaccia di San Gimignano is famed for its floral bouquet and persistent acidity. True to the varietal, this one from Panizzi has a satisfying bitter almond finish. Straw-colored with greenish reflections, this white can start the meal with an antipasto platter then continue on with light pasta or fish.

2013 Bordeaux Blanc, Château Suau $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Château Suau began converting to organic farming in 2008 after its proprietress came to the conclusion that using conventional products on the vines was having a harmful effect on vineyard workers. The soil here is a combination of clay and gravel. A charming citrus-laden white, serve chilled with fresh goat cheese or alongside grilled fish.

2015 Chardonnay, Milou $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Hands down, one of the best values for Chardonnay, especially if you are looking for one that is simply fermented and attains its richness from the fruit and not from oak chips. The vines grow on marl soils with clay and limestone in south France’s Languedoc region. A harmonious marriage of peach and pineapple flavors, pair with poultry or pork dishes.

2013 Macon Les Tilles, Domaine Sainte Barbe $19.99, $15.99 reorder
Whoa! What’s going on here? White Bordeaux, and now white Burgundy? This is the Dirty Dozen, right? Sure, this direct-imported Mâcon is fresh and zesty, with layers of complexity ranging from pears and citrus, to dusty mineral and baking spices. There’s no new oak involved here, so tee this one up with things like crab salad or a lobster roll.


2014 Rose l’Instant, Domaine Fondrèche $12.95 sale price, $12.30 reorder
The perennial winner of the palest Rosé in da house award, we’re big fans of this sleek, crisp offering from the Rhône Valley’s Ventoux region. Sébastien Vincenti is the winemaker, and we have found (after years of experience) that his Rosé drinks very well into its second year! The faintest bit of red fruit suggests pairing it with a sunny day on the beach.


2013 Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, Domaine Boudinaud $13.99, $11.19 reorder
TWH pals Thierry and Véronique Boudinaud have several vineyard sources to draw from, and this white is ALL Côtes-du-Rhône. It’s 60% Grenache Blanc and 40% Rousanne, so it’s fuller bodied and round on the palate, yet is fresh as a daisy. It’s another one that can be served as a cocktail wine, but bring it to the table and start carving that chicken!


2013 Minervois, Astruc Ste. Eulalie $13.98 net price, $12.58 reorder
A blend of Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache, this herb scented, dusty fruited red is medium bodied and pure. Languedoc’s Minervois appellation takes its name from the village of Minerve named after the Roman goddess of wisdom. This sun-drenched red will compliment a wide array of cuisines, particularly those found along the Mediterranean.


2012 Lagrein, Cortaccia $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Lagrein is most likely native to Alto Adige, or Sudtirol, in northeast Italy. Despite the high elevations, during growing season days can reach warm temperatures to ripen grapes. At its best, Lagrein is noted for its deep plum and cherry flavors and firm acidic structure. It begs for food and pairs nicely with roasted and grilled red meats or strong cheeses.


2013 Bonarda, Argento $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
In Argentina, Bonarda is only second to Malbec in the number of plantings. It originally hails from France and also grows in the Napa Valley where it is known as Charbono. A late ripener, this rustic varietal produces deeply colored reds with strong tannins. Aromatically spicy with plumy fruit, match it with hearty, comfort foods, pizza or gourmet burgers.

2014 Malbec, Alberto Furque $14.99, $11.99 reorder
Representing one of the best value red wines in the shop, we’ve been big fans of the Furque’s Malbec for over a decade! What’s not to love? All tank-fermented, big bold aromas of purple fruits and olallieberries, the palate is full bodied, yet all in balance with sweet tannins. It’s another barbecue friendly red, we’re thinking cowboy steak with chimichurri.


2014 Luberon, Tour de l’Isle $15.59, $12.47 reorder
The bouquet of fresh purple and black berry fruit is up front and center at first whiff, but Robert Rocchi’s Tour de l’Isle Luberon has plenty of substance to seduce the taster to pour a second glass. It’s mostly Syrah, with some Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault blended in. Its light tannins make it a great all purpose red: Pizzas, pastas, meatballs, etc.


2012 Montravel Vieilles Vignes, Château Puy-Servain $19.99, $15.99 reorder
Last but certainly not least is Daniel Hecquet’s ringer of a Montravel that we feel can hold its own in a blind Saint Emilion tasting. Made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, it has bold aromas of brambly fruit, a hint of spice, and a touch of mocha. On the palate it is firm, yet fruity; the red to open up with good company and rack of lamb.

2014 Pays du Gard Rosé, Domaine Saint Antoine $11.49, $9.19 reorder

A perennial TWH favorite, the brand new 2014 Saint Antoine Rosé has arrived! The 2014 marked the umpteenth time we’ve carried a new vintage from this tried and true producer from the south of France. It’s one of our more full-bodied Rosé wines that boasts aromas of candied red fruit and chalky minerals. The screwcap makes it great for picnics.

2014 Costières de Nîmes, Les Cimels Blanc, Château d’Or et de Gueules $15.99, $12.79 reorder

Making its DD debut is a brand new wine for us, Les Cimels Blanc. Made by one of our favorite producers in the Rhône Valley, it’s a blend of Grenache Blanc (70%), Rolle (15%), and Roussanne (15%). It shows hints of pineapples and peaches with lively acidity and a medium body. Pair this with a grilled chicken breast with caramelized onions and gruyère.

2013 Côtes de Gascogne Les Tours, Domaine La Hitaire $9.99, $7.99 reorder

Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros Manseng … not exactly household names; blend them together 65-30-5% respectively, and you have one of our favorite easy quaffing, crisp white wines in the shop. All tank fermented, it’s fresh as a daisy with hints of Granny Smith apples and other orchard fruit. It’s great on its own, and even better with a scampi risotto.

2013 Montenovo Godello, Valdesil $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder

After near extinction in the 1970’s, Godello is making a strong comeback in Spain. A family-run estate, Valdesil makes this one from their youngest vines grown on black slate. Citrus and under-ripe apple harken Chardonnay-like flavors, but the acid here is much more apparent. Grilled octopus, shrimp or scallops pair beautifully as would a shady nook.

2014 Verdicchio del Castelli di Jesi, Raphael $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder

Verdicchio, an ancient Italian grape variety, thrives in the Marche region whose entire eastern edge borders the Adriatic Sea. Maurizio Marchetti works in collaboration with his grower neighbors to make this affordable, crisp and lively white. Notes of white flowers and saline give way to dried tropical fruit flavors. Match up with pesto or shellfish pastas.

2012 Cabirol Blanc, Dit Celler $14.98, $13.48 reorder

This Catalonian white comes from organic vines aged 35-60 years grown in limestone and clay at over 1500 ft. elevations. A 50/50 blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeu, on the nose there are aromas of pears and apricots and on the palate flavors of guava and bitter almonds. Try with zucchini fritters or heirloom tomato bruschetta out on the deck!

2013 Grenache VDP, Brunel $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder

Brunel’s Grenache may be simple in its approach – vinified from 40 year old vines, aged and fermented in tank – but the resulting wine is not! Medium-bodied with ripe strawberry fruit lifted by scents of classic Provençal herbs like lavender and sage. Goes with just about anything, however ginger, garlic and soy-marinated chuck steak would work well here!

2013 BlauFranker Liter, Pfneisl $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder

This Austrian Blaufränkisch comes from sisters, Birgit and Katrin Pfneisl, who also work with this grape in Hungary where it is known as Kékfrankos. Juicy, succulent and spicy, light in body like Gamay, but with plenty of freshness, this is an ideal summer red. Give it a slight chill, if you want, and pair with turkey burgers or Sheboygan Brats.

2013 Rosso Conero, Marchetti $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder

Another wine from Marchetti (see Verdicchio above), his Rosso Conero is an elegant expression of the Montepulciano grape. Dark, smoky with deep ripe plum flavors, this red has some real chew on it! Take this wine to enjoy al fresco – it’ll stand up to your boldest bbq/grill food favorites. May we suggest a spice-rubbed T-Bone or smoky pork and beans.

2012 Côtes du Rhône Mataró, Vignobles Boudinaud $17.99, $15.28 reorder

And along comes a Côtes du Rhône made from 100% Mourvèdre, or Mataró as its locally known in Catalonia and along the southern French Mediterranean coast. It’s medium-full bodied with a gamey presence and rounded edges. As we get caught up with plating sizzling steaks and chops from off the grill, Boudinaud’s Mataró should pair perfectly with them.

2012 Barco Reale di Carmignano, Le Farnete $14.59, $11.67 reorder

Toning things down a bit is a versatile little number from Tuscany. Longtime TWH producer Enrico Pierazzuoli blends 80% Sangiovese with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon to give us his Barco Reale. The result is zippy and high-toned with layers of red fruits and herbs. What to pair with it? Easy answers: Pasta with red sauce, pizza, or grilled mild Italian sausages.

2011 Crozes-Hermitage Les Pierrelles, Domaine Belle 375ml $13.49, $10.79 reorder

Whoa! Crozes-Hermitage in the Dirty Dozen?!! Okay, it is in half bottle, which is perfect when looking for just a glass or two to share, and Crozes-Hermitage sure deserves to be shared! Pure Syrah fruit and that rocky Crozes mineral give the wine its name, Les Pierelles, or the little stones. Serve it with that low-and-slow smoked brisket.

2011 Chardonnay, Domaine de la Fruitière $12.98 net price, $11.68 reorder
Chardonnay grown in Muscadet? Those famous soils which contain granite, clay, and mica contribute to the bracing freshness and mineral quality of traditional Muscadet wines made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. This tank-fermented Chardonnay possesses that crispness combined with its inherent rich, fleshy yellow fruit. Great with scampi! 

2012 Chenin Blanc, Kiona Vineyards $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
Washington State has some ideal growing conditions for this Loire Valley stowaway, Chenin Blanc. Known for having aromas of crisp, green apples, Kiona’s Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile white wines in its price range. Fermented off-dry, you can serve it as an apèritif, with hors d’oeuvres, and with everything from fish tacos to Kung Pao Chicken.

2012 Rosé, Domaine de la Petite Cassagne $11.49, $9.19 reorder
Some of us don’t believe that Rosé has a ‘season’. A warm kitchen is cause enough to pop the cork and pour out a cool glass for the chef! But let’s not forget Rosé’s versatility. This one is equal parts Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre; the result is a dry, mineral driven Rosé with just a hint of red fruit. How about salmon burgers off the grill pan?

2012 Montravel Blanc, Château Calabre $10.99, $8.79 reorder 
Montravel is an appellation just beyond Bordeaux’s eastern boundary, and the values that come from there are in great abundance. Known primarily for white wines comprised of the same varieties as of white Bordeaux, Calabre’s blanc is half Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon, and 10% Muscadelle. Depending how you roll, this could be your sushi wine.

2009 Vernaccia Fiore, Montenidoli $21.99, $17.59 reorder 
“Nurse of the vines,” Elisabetta Fagiuoli consistently wins awards for her Fiore bottling. There is something about her vineyards planted in an ancient seabed perched above the medieval village of San Gimignano. The Fiore is made using only free-run juice, and in its purity, will pair well with rich dishes such as Fettuccine Alfredo.

2012 Gewurztraminer, Aresti $10.98 net price, $9.88 reorder
Hmmm, what’s Gewurztraminer doing in Chile? Founded in 1951, the Aresti Estate is one of the largest Chilean producers of this fruity, aromatic variety. This Gewurz is vinified dry, but its aromas suggest it would team up well with a burrito.

2010 CMS Red $11.98 net price, $10.78 reorder
Washington State’s original red blend, Hedges Family Estate’s CMS Red has been produced since 1987! Made from roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it does include 12% Syrah to bolster the aromatic complexity. Recognized as one of Columbia Valley’s best values, this blend is elegant and pure. The depth of fruit beckons something like a prime rib.

2008 Marzemino di Isera Husar, de Tarczal $15.98 net price, $14.38 reorder
Okay, let’s just call this one Husar. Made from the Marzemino grape, a genetic cousin of both Lagrein and Syrah, it makes for hearty red wines with complex aromas and hints of rusticity. A Husar was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Calvary, the current proprietor naming the wine after a direct ancestor. The perfect wine for a pizza-with-the-works.

2009 Corbières Réserve, Domaine Sainte Eugenie $16.95 sale price, $16.10 reorder 
Bon vivant Hervé Gauntier is an old pal of TWH, and we are happy to be able to offer his fancy Reserve Cuvée for such a reasonable price. Made from Syrah, Carignane, and Grenache, Hervé’s Réserve sees a little (20%) new cask with the remainder in 1 and 2 year old barrels. It has a spicy, lush, dark red fruit profile, and works well with red pasta sauces.

2010 Montravel Vieilles Vignes, Château Puy-Servain $20.99, $16.79 reorder
Ah, but Montravel has red wine too. This old vine Bordeaux-style blend will turn your perception on its head! Winemaker Daniel Hecquet has crafted a full-bodied red, reminiscent of a wine from St. Emilion for a fraction of the price. You will fool a lot of tasters if you sneak it into a Right Bank blind tasting. A fancy wine, yes; pour it with a rack of lamb.

2009 Côtes du Rhône Villages, Tour de l’Isle $14.59, $11.67 reorder
By now we’ve all heard how successful the 2009 vintage was in the southern Rhône Valley (and almost all of France, for that matter). We would all be doing ourselves a great service to profiter from such fortunate circumstances. There is always great value in Côtes du Rhône, even more so from 2009! It’s great on its own and great with a bowl of olives.

2009 Château Aimée, Médoc $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorder
Speaking of 2009 … It was a fantastic vintage in Bordeaux. So good, mind you, that we continue to go back to the well to stock up on “lesser known” chateaux. Why? Quality. Value. This Médoc bottling wowed us with its honesty; it’s just straight up, quality Bordeaux. This will pair well with any of the traditional meals you would want with a full-bodied red.

2010 Orvieto, Cardèto
Big on our list of springtime wines are dry, crisp, easy quaffers that deliver in the quality department, yet keep the big bills in your wallet. This Orvieto is just the ticket! Lean and crisp with a citrusy freshness, this blend of Trebbiano and Grechetto is a great refresher should a warm spring afternoon come your way. Pairs great with a bowl o’mussels.

2010 Chardonnay, Viano Vineyards
Is it us, or do you ever see Cali Chardonnay in the sub $10 category anymore? At least quality, sub $10 Cali Chardonnay? Sales reps visit us and pour and pour, but we keep saying no until the right one comes along. Well, here it is! From Contra Costa county, no less; halfway between the Napa and Livermore Valleys comes the Viano. Pair with a crab salad.

2010 Vino Valpredo Bianca Mia, Fritz Winery
Rather than choose between Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, why not blend them? At least that’s what our friends at Sonoma’s Fritz Winery thought. You know what? This is some quality juice. Aromas of stone fruits and citrus blossoms give way to a zesty citrus palate. Anya says grill up some shrimp and serve it with mango salsa … and this, of course.

NV Prosecco Superiore, Giavi
Talk to any of us about our new D.O.C.G. Prosecco Superiore, the Giavi, and prepare yourself for an enthusiastic reply! Seriously, this Prosecco has it all: tiny bubbles, a pale, frosty appearance, depth, and crispness. Crostini with caviar?

2010 Blanc de Domaine de la Petite Cassagne
Her name is Diane de Puymorin. We adore her wines … all of them. Diane purchased the Petite Cassagne estate back in 1998, renamed it Château d’Or et des Gueules, yet still pays homage to the old guard with a Rouge, Rosé, and this Blanc. Diane blends 40% Rolle (Vermentino) with Grenache Blanc and the result is a bright, citrus infused aromatic showpiece.

2009 Fernão Pires, Quinta do Alqueve
Dare we try to get wine geeky on you, but here’s Portugal’s Fernão Pires blended with a smidge of Arinto. Geeky? Maybe. But the stone fruity aromas and crisp mouthfeel will make wine geeks out of us all! Great with sardines.

2009 Garnacha Two Rows, Odisea
As we switch to the reds, let’s point out that our friends at Odisea have another hit on their hands. Mostly Grenache with small parts Syrah and Tempranillo, the Two Rows is a plump palate pleaser. Ripe cherries and raspberries mingle with vanilla spice and herbs resulting in ethereal harmony. If it’s burgers on the grill; sorry, these Two Rows are taken.

2010 Tempranillo, Enanzo
Yummy Tempranillo from Spain’s Navarra region! The philosophy at Enanzo is simple. To quote them, “this Tempranillo is made by applying the only true winemaking criterion: intimate, permanent, progressive harmony between man and his environment.” It works here, the herb infused fruit is braced by dusty tannins and spirited acidity. Great with pizza.

2009 Château de Bouchet La Rentiere
What a vintage 2009 was for the wines of Bordeaux! The Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker likened the vintage to the legendary 1982 noting one exception: in 1982 there weren’t many small, inexpensive producers taking advantage of the perfect weather to make great affordable Bordeaux. That’s different now. Pair this beauty with your prime rib.

2008 Les Cimels, Château d’Or et des Gueules
If there’s a better $15 red wine here at TWH, I haven’t seen it. The aforementioned Diane de Puymorin blends some old vine Carignan with Grenache and Syrah, and the result is an herbal masterpiece. Forest floor, Kalamata olives, and black tea dominate the aromas, and the palate is more savory than fruity. The perfect wine for pasta with an herbal sauce.

2009 Côtes du Rhône les Boissières, Vignobles Boudinaud
New to us is Veronique and Thierry Boudinaud’s les Boissières Côtes du Rhône. It’s an exciting story as 100% of what’s imported to the US is imported for us! Think honest, old-school Côtes du Rhône here. It shows plenty of fruit, but without going overboard. Toss in some cracked pepper and herbs Provençal, and you get the drift. This is yet another versatile bottle in what can be called The Versatile Dozen. Great on its own, or paired with cassoulet.

2006 Syrah, Alberto Furque
Ever popular with our staff and customers, the Alberto Furque line crushes it when it comes to quality for price. Grown at altitudes of over 3000 feet, the vineyards of Mendoza’s Bodega Aconquija (we call them Alberto Furque) get just the right amount of warm days and cool nights to produce wines with dazzling structure. This Syrah sings of balance and harmony. If you find yourself dreaming about some thinly sliced Argentine beef with Chimichurri sauce, pour this.
